The Wise Women Waters Her Own Garden First

"Stretching herself too thin she breaks her connections.
Staying too busy, she has no time.
Defining herself only through others she loses her own definition.
The wise women waters her own garden first."
by Lao Tzu in the Tao Te Ching

Lao Tzu is considered to be he father of Taoism in China & is credited with being the author of the ancient Taoist text the "Tao Te Ching." Although his historical existence & who actually authorshiped the "Tao Te Ching" is strongly debated, this does not distract from the wisdom of the teachings in the "Tao Te Ching."

The wise women waters her own garden first........this is something we definitely need to heed for our own ultimate wellbeing. Particularly, as most of us western women have been taught to give fully of ourselves without taking the time to rest & rejuvenate. Our society has forgotten the age old wisdom that recognizes that in order to fully give, we first need to receive & take care of ourselves.

Ask yourself if you have developed the pattern of "over-giving" & consequently have neglected your own needs? If you have, then you will recognize the following thought patterns:
  • "I must be a perfect image of having it all together & able to support others"
  • "Being busy means I am doing a good job & getting things done"
  • 'How worthy & good I feel about myself depends on how much I do for others or add value to the world"
  • "Taking time for myself is selfish & my friends, kids, partner take up all my time anyway"
  • "Rest - what's that?"

Failure to take time to nourish & replenish ourselves leaves us exhausted & depleted & quite frankly most women I see in my clinical practice who have reached 40 plus are exhausted. If this pattern is not corrected before the menopause transition it can trigger a lot of imbalances at this challenging time of change in a women's life.

Extreme fatigue such as when you reach the point of being so tired you just want to cry; is a sure sign that you need to do absolutely nothing except totally rest. However, fatigue that persists should be investigated to determine if there are any underlying causes such as anaemia or thyroid imbalances.

When you are feeling fatigued the tendency can be to reach out for stimulants such as coffee, chocolate & sugary drinks or food. Whilst these may temporarily give you a boost of energy, the problem is that long- term these stimulants deplete your vitality & inhibit restful & restorative sleep. This is because they they put your body in a constant state of fear, fight or flight mode.

Therefore, I have provided you with 7 tips on how to boost your energy naturally:

7 Ways To Boost Your Energy Naturally

1. Ensure you include a high quality protein rich food [ie. fish, chicken, lean red meat, eggs, natural yogurt, nuts or legumes] with each main meal as well as protein based snacks. This will help to maintain steady blood sugar levels which in turn will help to sustain your energy levels.

2. Include green vegetables in your diet daily. Green plants are rich in chlorophyll [the darker the green the more chlorophyll is present] which is like the energy or "blood" of plants. Seaweeds in particular are very nourishing as they are a rich & dense source of many minerals & vitamins.

 3. According to traditional Chinese medicine eating raw or cold foods & drinks can contribute to lowered energy. The reason being that you use up your "internal fire" or energy to warm up the food or drink so that they can be digested effectively. So check in an observe how your own body responds to raw or cold foods. An option is to "warm them up" by adding some fresh ginger root to juiced vegetables or grating some ginger into a salad. If you are very fatigued you may be better sticking with warming a nourishing foods such as soup.

4. Avoid the use of stimulants such as coffee, black tea, chocolate & sugary drinks or foods.

5. Breathe deeply........most of the time we are shallow breathing & not using the full capacity of lungs & therefore we are not getting sufficient oxygen into our cells. A good habit to get into is to stop every hour & take slow deep breaths for 5 minutes. This will get more life giving oxygen into your body as well as help counteract the effects of stress.

6. Schedule some time each week to do something nourishing for yourself such as; a relaxing bath,a walk in nature, attend a yoga class, catch up with a girlfriend or have a facial or massage.

7.Take your senses inwards..............when we constantly have our senses engaged in our external environment this can drain our energy reserves. Therefore, it is important to balance this with spending some time each day to draw our senses inwards into stillness & silence. Practices such as yoga, breathing techniques, Qi Gong, Tai Chi & meditation assist us to do this.
